Palm Software

Palm software is used for the first types of PDA computers ever made. These were called the Palm Pilot. To some extent these units and corresponding software are still popular today, although there is quite a bit of competition working against them.

Palm Software And OS

The original Palm Pilots ran on the Palm OS (Palm Operating System). The Palm Operating system is designed to be more user-friendly than regular computers for certain basic operations. This unit was first created in the year 1996 by what is now called Palm Computing.

Palm OS is software that is combined with other applications, such as Palm software that would run a clock, note pad, address book, memo viewer, security software, and sync. Most Palm Pilots used operating systems that were installed on them as early as 1996.

Components Of The First Palm Pilots

They usually came with a serial communications port. Their RAM size was either 128 or 512 KB-which then was probably considered large, but nowadays would be quite small. In later years, the memory size of these units was up to 1MB, which is hard to imagine nowadays, with laptops and handhelds far beyond that capability.

Later versions of Palm Pilots were made with a backlight, but with no infrared port or flash memory. That was to come later.

At one point, Palm Pilots were later simply called Palms, due to a legal dispute with another company, Pilot Pen Corporation. However, Palm Pilot became a household generic name after awhile, which applied to all comparable handheld units.

Over the years different versions of Palm computers and other handheld devices have improved. How they include quite a bit of the same software that is installed on regular home computers. These units often are combined with phones or camera phones as well, and often music and video files are played on these devices.

Palm Security Concerns

Even though some Palm PC units are now password-protected, it is possible for them to still be hacked if stolen. Users are advised to be careful where they keep these units. Greater measures have been taken, however, to make sure the new PDA’s and handhelds are safer and secure than in times past.

Palm Tracking Software

One type of useful software that is often installed on PDAs and Palm computers is GPS software, which is a tracking system. This can help users find out where they are going, or where people can find them in the case of an emergency.
